Things to come...

I am almost finished with my second dish rag and will post the photo when it is complete. Really exciting stuff, I know. Try to hold out just a little longer. :) I am going to make one more lovely square or rectangle for my sister, then it's on to bigger and better things. Like, say, a hat. Or a bag. That'll really be worth posting, especially if I mess it up. My knitting buddy at work has thrown down the knitting gauntlet as she brought in a hat that she made this weekend. D-oh! Nothing like a little competition to make me try harder.

Just for kicks, here is an interesting photo that I saw on Flickr (I think).

Southernism of the Day

Southernism of the Day

Pitch a Fit

the act of expressing displeasure in a very noticeable way, often involving swearing and throwing things; having a temper tantrum

Example: "Mama's gonna pitch a fit if Daddy misses church again."

Today's entry was inspired by a fellow Alabama knitter. Thanks, D!

Aw, Look, My First Finger Weaving

M'kay, here are the pictures of the Peruvian flat braid I promised. Not very impressive, is it? I love the Thick n Quick Wool Ease yarn I used but it isn't quite right for this project. I need coarser wool that isn't quite as stretchy, I do believe.

I Give You...the Green Trapezoid

Even with a broken needle I managed to produce a finished project. It started out as a rectangle in garter stitch, but ended up a trapezoid since it only has 2 right angles. Could someone please tell me how I manage to add stitches?????? I don't even know how to increase yet!

Now I freely admit I was watching the movie Apocalypto about halfway through the process and that's when things started to go awry. Great movie, I loved it, but it is stressful and that is reflected in my knitting. I suppose if I actually stop knitting while watching T.V. I'll have no excuse for not being good at this! But hey, I can wash dishes with a trapezoid, I'm not particular. By the way, put the metal needles there for a scale just so you could see how small my dish rag is. This must be a hoot for all you experienced knitters out there! Do you even remember being so unskilled? Maybe most folks are better the first time, I don't know. I will keep trying. I had an epiphany the other day. As much as I'd love to have beautiful sweaters and baby stuff to show for my efforts, it's really more about the process. I love the rhythm of knitting. Knitting is relaxing for me. If I never make anything other than a dish rag, that's okay with me. Knitting provides enjoyment and I'll take it where I can get it.

In other fiber art news, I made a Peruvian flat braid today on my lunch hour. I have wanted to learn finger weaving for quite a while, and I thought I'd begin with a simple one. I hope to one day make sashes and garters for living history demonstrations. This doesn't count as a new hobby because it IS weaving, after all. I'll post photos later since I'm having severe technical difficulties right now. Dadblasted computers. Expletive, expletive, expletive!!!!!!!!

Sticks and Stones

Note to self: Keep wooden knitting needles off of the couch. Failure to do so may result in the awesome weight of your butt breaking said needles, thereby rendering them useless (more or less).

Yes, I sat on a needle. Fortunately, it was lying horizontally on the couch when I did it. Otherwise, I would likely not be posting anything because I would be high on emergency room doctor-prescribed morphine. Plus the non-pointy end broke off, so I can at least finish my green rectangle, aka the dish rag. My edges are much better, thanks to advice from a fellow knitter. I've ordered more needles and even bought some double pointed needles to eventually try knitting in the round. I figure that'll be good for demonstrating at the living history event in November. Perhaps that will be sufficient time to become a real knitter! I'll be able to do some weaving, but I will have to buy a tape loom (oh, darn). Apparently modern inkle looms were not in use until the early 2oth century, at least in this country. Wouldn't want to be inaccurate when teaching future generations about Alabama's history. There are enough misconceptions about the South as it is.
